M109 "Paladin" | The Gold Standard
Artillery is one of the most important factors of any armed force, something that has been true for literally centuries, and in the modern day, it is rightfully referred to as "The God of War". Throughout the Cold War, the American M109 was the gold standard by which all other self-propelled howitzer designs would be compared, and its influence has shaped the concept of artillery itself ever since.

Perhaps the most famous, or infamous, point of interest when it comes to the Russian equipment sent to Ukraine in 2022, is the presence of large rooftop cage armor pieces, nicknamed "Cope Cages". Initially reported as an anti-Javelin measure, after the Ukrainian army took delivery of shipments of the deadly top-attack missiles, their failure in this role has lead many to believe that some other...

    M10 Booker is the Sherman revisited with a better gun. Like the M10 Tank destroyer with better armor. M10's fired HE most of the time both direct fire and indirect fire. M18 TD were almost too fast to be of use in supporting infantry but very good at killing tanks. My only worry is role creep and ensuring ammo is always available for resupply. For background Tarawa taught the Marines the Importance of having lots of ammo on board so they could fight for a full day.

    Why is it that when a brown skinned soldier gets something named after him, he has to share it with a pale skinned soldier? Ive never heard of the military naming anything after two people at the same time. So, finally, they name something after a brown soldier, and he has to share. I find that pretty ironic! I dont mean to make anything about race, but I cant help but to notice, unless somone can show me where they have done this before, which I highly doubt.

    • @ArmorCast
      @ArmorCast 3 дня назад

      That is honestly a fair point, however this is also the first time a US vehicle has been named after troops who were not Generals (Patton, Abrams, Bradley, Sheridan, Sherman etc.). I do wonder how much that plays into it

    • @IndigenousAmericanTrucker
      @IndigenousAmericanTrucker 16 часов назад

      @ArmorCast Yes, you are definitely right about that! Most are definitely named after Generals. I can't argue that at all! I mean, I guess it just depends on which of these two soldier's names came up first. If it was the brown soldier, then my point possibly still stands. If it was the pale soldier, then I'd assume they had two Bookers from two different time periods and wanted to try something different by naming a tank after them both! It could also be that same latter scenario if the brown soldier's name was first. However, I can't help but think what I initially thought. I mean, bcuz that's normally the case for the most part when it comes to anything dealing with my people! Like I said, though. I didn't want to make it about race, I just couldn't help but notice it, but you made a fair point as well, though!

    I've always been curious as to why nobody has tried putting the A-10's rotary cannon on a wheeled, or tracked chassis? Is it not a viable anti-tank weapon anymore?

    • @ArmorCast
      @ArmorCast 5 дней назад

      It never really was. It's great at taking out BMPs, BTRs and MTLBs, other stuff like that, as well as hitting machine gun nests or suppressing enemy troop positions... but by the time it entered service, the main battle tanks of the day were already pretty well defended against it. Contrary to popular belief, tank-busting has never been the A-10's job. Couple that with the size, weight and recoil force of the GAU-8, and it's just not worth trying to integrate into a ground vehicle, even for its capabilities against light armored vehicles and other threats. As for why they never tried it... ... they did. General Electric submitted a proposal to the DIVAD program (divisional air defence) mounting a shortened version of the A-10's gun on an M48 tank chassis... it was not successful. There was also the T249 Vigilante with its gigantic 37mm rotary cannon (with a full 4 seconds worth of ammo!) and then vehicles like the LAV-AD with its rotary 25mm or the Russian Pantsir and Tunguska with 30mm guns... but none of them are effective against tanks.

      Drones are only as significant a threat as they are now, because they were relatively new and unexpected in the role and capacity they've been used in, in conflicts like Ukraine. Going forward, heavy development work has been put into short range air defence (SHORAD) and vehicles like the M10 are coming as standard with significant radio jammer suites in order to protect them from drones from above as well as IEDs from below.

    I like that it has a rifled barrel. Why don't MBTs?

    • @ArmorCast
      @ArmorCast 5 дней назад

      A number of reasons - rifled barrels are more complex and expensive to manufacture and maintain, they reduce velocity and therefore range, and when firing fin-stabilised and/or sub-calibre projectiles, they're actually less accurate than smoothbore guns. They are MORE accurate when firing full-bore conical projectiles, but MBTs don't use full-bore shells anymore. The M10 Booker though will get a lot of use out of its HESH ammunition, which just so happens to be a full-bore conical shell

    The centurion is Britain’s first MBT. It’s also the world’s first MBT. Not sure why a guy as knowledgeable as koala forgot this

    • @ArmorCast
      @ArmorCast 20 дней назад

      Bit of a technicality. Chieftain was Britain’s first MBT that was DESIGNED as an MBT from the get-go. The Centurion was actually designed as a standard medium tank during WW2, and then became what’s called a “gun tank”, same as the M47 Patton, the M103, and the FV214 Conqueror (the latter two of which are often erroneously called “heavy tanks”). The first Centurion model that can be considered a proper main battle tank is the Mk.9 (or the Mk.7/2, but from memory the Mk.9 actually came first). A lot of people mistake the “main battle tank” as just being an alternate name for the “medium tank” in a world where “heavy tanks” no longer exist… but that’s not the case. Medium tanks, heavy tanks, gun tanks, and main battle tanks, are all distinct classes of vehicle. I actually meant to do a dedicated explainer video about this concept, but haven’t yet gotten around to it. The old RUclips channel of ManyMilesAway has a decent explainer on the gun tank concept though
